How Many Watts Does an Electric Hot-Water Pot Use — and How Much a Month? Does Keeping It Warm All Day Cost a Lot?

An electric hot-water pot sits plugged in all day, and many suspect it is the culprit behind a high bill. An electric hot-water pot uses power in two phases: boiling draws a high ~600–1,300 W but only briefly, while keeping warm draws just ~30–45 W but continuously all day. What builds a monthly bill is the “keep-warm”, not the boil — yet it is still not as expensive as people fear: kept on warm all day it runs roughly 40–120 THB a month (at ~4 THB/unit, depending on pot size, insulation and room temperature). If you only want hot water occasionally, boiling on demand with a kettle is cheaper than keeping a pot warm all day; but if you need hot water all day, an airpot on warm is convenient and its cost is still reasonable.

How Many Watts Does It Use — Boiling vs Keeping Warm?

A hot-water pot has two power figures, and people usually look at only one: the boiling figure (high, used briefly) and the keep-warm figure (low, but drawn the whole time it is plugged in). A bigger pot uses more of both. Read the actual figure on the label (the table shows typical Thai-market ranges):

The boiling figure on the label is the peak while the heater is fully on. In keep-warm mode the heater cycles on and off to hold temperature, so the real average is lower than the label's keep-warm figure. Kept On Warm All Day — How Much Per Month?

The arithmetic is direct: cost = power (kW) × hours plugged in × ~4 THB/unit. Keep-warm averages roughly 25–35 W; e.g. left on warm 24 h/day at 30 W = 0.03 × 24 = 0.72 units/day ≈ 22 units/month ≈ 86 THB, plus ~1 THB for a daily boil. Bottom line: kept on warm all day it is about 40–120 THB a month — not the main driver of a spiking bill (air-con and water heaters use far more), though it is a quiet round-the-clock draw. If the bill is genuinely abnormal, work through the abnormal-bill checklist before blaming the pot.

Airpot vs Kettle vs Dispenser — Which Is Cheaper?

All three give you hot water, but they differ in whether they must stay plugged in to keep warm — and that is what decides the bill:

Hot-water pot (airpot): boils then keeps warm all day — most convenient when you need hot water often, but you pay the “keep-warm” standby, ~40–120 THB/month if left on all day.

Electric kettle (1,500–2,200 W): boils fast only when you want it, no keep-warm, no round-the-clock draw — you pay only for water actually boiled. Cheapest if you drink hot water only a few times a day, but there is no ready hot water on standby.

Hot–cold dispenser: provides both hot and cold 24 h, so it has more standby draw than an airpot (it also cools). Good where many people use it, but not the most power-efficient choice for a small household.

How to choose: drink hot water only occasionally → a kettle boiled on demand is cheapest; need hot water all day (frequent tea/coffee/milk/instant noodles) → an airpot is worth the convenience and its cost is still reasonable; office / busy household → a dispenser. Whichever you pick, don't leave it on warm when no one is using it.

How to Use a Hot-Water Pot for Less Electricity

Because the pot's cost comes from “how long it keeps warm” and “boiling more water than you need”, saving means cutting both:

Fill only what you need — more water uses more power both to boil and to keep warm. If you use little, don't boil a full pot.

Unplug at night / when away — cutting the keep-warm during the many hours nobody uses it is the single most effective way to lower the pot's cost.

Occasional user? Use a kettle instead — if you only need hot water a few times a day, boiling on demand is cheaper than keeping a pot warm all day.

Pick an efficient / well-insulated model — a pot with the No.5 energy label or thick insulation draws less on keep-warm.

Keep the lid closed, don't open it often — heat that escapes makes the heater kick in more often to hold temperature.

Descale periodically — scale on the heater slows boiling and uses more power; clean it as the manual says.
