Abnormally High Electricity Bill? Self-Test Leaks & the Meter Before You Complain

① Triage First: Did the UNITS Rise, or Only the Baht?

② The 3 Suspects — Tested With Nothing but Meter Readings

One rule powers everything: 1 unit = 1,000 watts × 1 hour. Every test below is that rule held against your own meter (how to read every meter type: how to read your electricity meter).

Suspect 1 — A Degrading Appliance or Hidden Load

The usual culprits: an aging fridge with a worn door seal or a compressor that never cycles off, a scaled-up water heater, a water pump that won't cut out (a leaking check valve/float keeps it cycling all night), and an AC low on refrigerant running long compressor cycles. To catch one: switch off ONE suspect appliance for 24 hours, note the meter units before and after, and compare with a normal day — the missing difference is that appliance's consumption. Suspect 2 — An Electricity Leak (2-Step Breaker Test)

A leak is current flowing to ground or a metal frame without passing through any appliance — the meter bills it like normal usage, so you pay for electricity nobody used. You can test it in ~30 minutes without touching a single wire:

Step 1 — Main breaker OFF, watch the meter: flip the main breaker for the whole house (warning: fridge and essential devices go dark — pick a tolerable window). The meter disc must stop completely / the digital count must freeze. If the meter still advances with the main breaker off, electricity is being used upstream of your panel or the meter is faulty — that is the utility's problem: call MEA 1130 / PEA 1129 immediately.

Step 2 — Main ON, every appliance OFF: restore the main breaker, unplug/switch off every appliance, note the meter, and wait 30–60 minutes. If units still accumulate with nothing running, there is a leak in your house circuits. Don't hunt it yourself — call a licensed electrician (you MAY narrow it down by flipping sub-breakers one at a time to tell the electrician which circuit leaks, but the repair is their job).

Reading the table: a mere 50 W leak — one light bulb's worth — silently burns about 169 THB/month, and 100 W already clears 338 THB/month. This is why a bill that creeps up month after month with identical habits is the signature of a leak or a degrading appliance, while a single-month jump usually points at the rate side or the meter.

Suspect 3 — A Fast Meter (Known-Load Accuracy Test)

Before blaming the meter, pass leak-test steps 1–2 first (otherwise you can't tell a leak from a fast meter). Then run an accuracy test with an appliance whose wattage you know: switch everything else off and run a ~2,000 W electric kettle for 30 minutes (keep it boiling — refill so it heats continuously). By the 1 unit = 1,000 W × 1 h rule the meter should advance by ≈1.0 unit. If it repeatedly registers 1.3–1.5 units over several runs, the meter genuinely trends fast. Log everything (start/end time, before/after readings, the appliance model) as evidence for the test request.

Interpretation caveat: a kettle's true draw can swing ~±10% with model and momentary line voltage — a small deviation is NOT proof of a bad meter. Treat this test as a preliminary signal that justifies requesting the utility's official meter test, which is the real arbiter.

③ Confirmed — Where and How to Escalate

Assemble the evidence first

The evidence pack that moves things fast: 3–6 months of bills (showing per-month units), dated photos of the meter reading, your breaker step 1–2 results, and the kettle-test numbers (before/after). The same pack serves both the utility and the OCPB.

Meter or unit anomaly → the utility

Call to request an official meter test: MEA 1130 for Bangkok, Nonthaburi, Samut Prakan / PEA 1129 everywhere else. Quote your customer number (on the bill) and the test results you logged. The utility runs a formal meter-testing procedure (conditions and any handling fee follow each utility's published rules — confirm the amount on the hotline). If the meter is found faulty, bill correction follows their regulations.

Renting and the per-unit rate is too high → OCPB
