A clothes iron is one of the highest-wattage appliances in the house — but it runs only minutes at a time, so the real cost is usually just tens of baht a month. But the key point is that an iron only draws that power in short bursts while you actually use it, not continuously — and the thermostat cycles the element on and off to hold temperature. So the real cost is usually just 2–5 baht per session and tens of baht a month (at ~4 THB/unit). What you do need to watch is not the bill but the high current of 9–11 amps: sharing a power strip with a kettle or microwave at the same time can trip a breaker or overheat the plug.

Steam Iron vs Dry Iron — Any Difference in Power?
They differ in watts — a steam iron uses more because it boils water — but the cost per actual ironing job is often close, because steam smooths fabric faster and takes less time:
Steam iron (1,600–2,400 W): more power per minute, but the steam penetrates fibres and smooths fabric fast — best for thick / very wrinkled cloth, shirts and linen, and it finishes quicker, which partly offsets the higher draw.
Dry iron (1,000–1,200 W): less power per minute, simple and durable — good for thin fabrics, light daily touch-ups, or cloth that should not get steam, but slower on badly wrinkled items.
Can an Iron Trip the Breaker or Overheat a Power Strip?
Yes — because an iron draws a high 9–11 amps. The problem is not the bill but the **combined current on one circuit / one plug.** Watch these three points:
Don't share a power strip between the iron and other high-draw devices at once — a kettle, microwave or air-fryer. Together they exceed the strip's rating (often 10–16 A), overheating the cable and plug until it melts or burns. Plug the iron straight into a wall socket.
The breaker trips when you iron while other things are on. If one branch circuit carries several high-draw appliances, the combined current exceeds the breaker rating (e.g. 16 A) and it cuts out to protect the wiring — not a faulty iron, just too much total load. See breaker-trip causes & fixes.

How to Iron for Less Electricity
Because the iron's cost is driven mainly by “actual ironing time” and “re-heating from cold”, saving means finishing in one go and getting full value from the heat:
Iron in one batch — collect clothes and iron them together so you don't re-heat the iron from cold many times, which is the most power-hungry phase.
Sort by temperature — start with low-heat fabrics (synthetics) and work up to high-heat ones (cotton/linen), so the thermostat cycles less.
Use residual heat — switch off / unplug a minute or two before you finish and iron the last thin items with the stored heat.
Iron slightly damp or lightly misted cloth — a little moisture smooths faster and takes less time (and a steam iron needs less steam).
Keep the soleplate clean / descale it — a dirty or scaled soleplate (steam irons) drags and needs repeated passes, wasting time and power.
Iron only what needs it — some clothes hang out their creases; or use a standing steamer to touch up only the wrinkled spots instead of the whole garment.
