Breaker Trips Often, Won't Reset — the Causes and How to Fix It Safely

A breaker trips for three main reasons: overload (drawing more than its rating at once), a short circuit (live wires touching), and earth leakage (an RCD/ELCB cutting off). If it trips often or won't reset, first unplug appliances, then switch them on one at a time to find the culprit — never force the lever with a tool and never bridge it with wire or a coin: that risks fire and fatal shock. A tripping breaker is usually doing its job to protect you, not necessarily broken.

Why does a breaker keep tripping?

A breaker cuts off when it senses something wrong in the circuit and disconnects for safety. Almost every case falls into three groups: overload (total draw exceeds the breaker's rating), a short circuit (wiring or a device shorting), and earth leakage (current escaping the circuit so an RCD/ELCB trips). Each trips in a different way, so the symptom points to the cause.

The breaker tripped and won't reset — what do I do?

It won't reset because the fault is still there — force it and it just re-trips. The right way: switch OFF every branch breaker first, reset the main, then turn the branches back on one at a time to find the offending circuit. Some models must be pushed fully to OFF before they will go to ON. If the main won't hold even with all branches off, the breaker itself or the main cable may be the problem — call an electrician.

It trips when I turn on the AC / water heater — do I need a bigger meter?

Not necessarily — first tell whether it's overload or leakage. If it only trips when several appliances run together, that's overload: don't run them together, or give a heavy appliance its own circuit. Only if the home's total load genuinely exceeds the meter size (e.g. after adding several ACs) should you consider upsizing the meter. If the RCD trips the instant a water heater comes on, that's usually leakage in the unit or earth wire — not a meter-size issue.

A tripped branch vs main breaker — what does it tell me?

Which lever dropped narrows the location fast: a single branch that trips means the fault is in that circuit (say the kitchen sockets) — check only its appliances; the main tripping can mean total overload or a short/leak affecting the whole house; the RCD specifically tripping means leakage — focus on anything near water or damp. A modern consumer unit usually has a main + RCD + several branch breakers, and knowing which does what speeds up the fix.

Why does the breaker trip more in the rainy season?

Damp air in the rainy season makes earth leakage easier: water or moisture reaches wire joints, outdoor outlets, a water pump, or a poorly-earthed water heater, so the RCD trips more than usual — a useful warning you should never defeat by removing or bridging the RCD. The fix is to find the damp spot, dry it, check the earth wire, and if it keeps tripping have an electrician inspect the system; never risk using anything that tingles while it's wet.

When should I call an electrician or replace the breaker?

Call an electrician immediately if there is a burning smell, sparks, or a breaker/outlet that is unusually hot, if the main won't hold even with all branches off, if it re-trips with no findable cause, or if anyone feels a shock/tingle. A breaker itself can wear out (tripping too easily or not latching) and may need replacing — but let a competent electrician do it, since the power must be off and the rating chosen correctly. Find the cause step by step

Follow this order safely. If you reach anything dangerous (sparks, burning smell, shock), stop and call an electrician right away.

  1. 1) Unplug the loads first

    Switch off and unplug appliances on the affected circuit, especially heavy or water-contact ones (AC, water heater, water pump, microwave).

  2. 2) Reset the correct way

    Turn off all branch breakers, push the lever fully to OFF, then to ON. For the main, reset it first while all branches are off.

  3. 3) Turn circuits on one by one

    Switch branches on one at a time, waiting a moment. The branch that makes it trip holds the fault; then plug appliances back in one by one to find which device.

  4. 4) Tell overload from leakage

    If it trips only with several running together but not one at a time, it's overload; if a single device (often a heater/pump) trips the RCD instantly, it's leakage — stop using that device.

  5. 5) Fix the root cause or call a pro

    Overload = spread usage / split circuits / consider a bigger meter; leakage = repair or replace the device and check earthing; a short circuit or an unfound cause = call an electrician. Never bridge the breaker.
