Water Heater 3500 / 4500 / 6000 Watts: Cost, Meter, Breaker & Wiring Compared

All three sizes compared on one page: monthly cost from real current-period rates, actual current draw from manufacturer datasheets, breaker/cable sizes from the manuals, and the question everyone forgets — can your meter take it, and what does upgrading really cost?

Short answer: at 30 minutes of showering a day, a 4500W unit costs only ~70 THB/month more than 3500W, and 6000W ~176 THB/month more than 3500W (computed from real current-period rates — table below). Electricity is not the real decider. Your home's electrical system is: 4500–6000W draws 20.5–27.2A, requiring a 15(45)A meter, 4–6 mm² cable and the manual-specified breaker. If your home or rental still runs a 5(15) meter, upgrading the meter plus rewiring is the real lump-sum cost of going bigger.

① Real monthly cost: 3500 vs 4500 vs 6000 watts

A water heater draws a lot of power for a short time — so the real cost is lower than people fear. This table assumes 30 shower-minutes per day × 30 days, priced at the marginal rate of a 151–400-unit/month home, including May–Aug 2026 Ft and 7% VAT. Note: below 150 units/month your marginal rate is slightly lower; above 400 units slightly higher (top tier 4.4217 before Ft/VAT). ② The table appliance shops rarely show: meter × breaker × cable

Higher watts = higher current (amps), and everything must scale with it: breaker, cable and the meter at the front of your house. The currents below are **real manufacturer specs** (Stiebel Eltron datasheets); breaker/cable figures come from a **manufacturer manual** (Panasonic). Brands differ slightly — **always follow the manual of the model you buy and have a licensed electrician install it.**

Why 5(15) is "borderline" even for 3500W: the A(B) meter format means A amps normal, B amps maximum — a 5(15) meter tops out at 15A **for the whole house**, while a single 3500W heater draws 15.9A (real manufacturer spec) before you add the aircon, fridge or rice cooker running at the same time. That's why small-meter homes and rentals trip the breaker mid-shower. Safety: 4 things MEA says to always check

MEA's pre-cool-season checklist for water heaters: (1) inspect the cable for damage, (2) a **ground wire (สายดิน) is required** to standard — especially in older homes without one, (3) press the Test button monthly so the ELCB/RCD leakage breaker actually trips, (4) have an electrician inspect the system at least yearly. A water heater is the one appliance you use while soaking wet — don't self-install unless you are a qualified electrician.

③ The real total cost when going bigger means a meter upgrade

This is where most water-heater reviews stop short: if your home already has a 15(45) meter and proper wiring, upgrading costs just "device price + tens of baht/month". But if you're on a 5(15) meter, two more real costs stack on top:

Utility fee (meter size change)

MEA (Bangkok metro): 1-phase meter inspection fee (5(15)/15(45)/30(100)) = **700 THB**, with no deposit for residential. PEA (provincial) fees vary by area — call 1129 to confirm. Full process, documents and details on the meter application cost page.

Private electrician (main cable/panel/breaker)

Upsizing the meter usually means upgrading the main feed cable and panel breaker to carry the new current — this is a **private electrician's cost, not the utility's**, and it depends entirely on the actual site (cable run, install point, panel condition), so no honest flat number exists. Get a licensed electrician to quote on-site before deciding.

The honest math: the 3500→4500W electricity gap (~70 THB/month) can pay back a 700-THB utility fee, but it will **never pay back a full rewiring by itself**. The right reasons to size up are "not warm enough in cool season / high water pressure / several back-to-back users" — not electricity cost. In a rental or on a 5(15) meter you can't modify: a 3500W unit is the safe and correct answer.

④ The decision: which size fits whom

3,500 watts

Rentals/condos on small meters, homes with limited existing wiring, or typical central/southern Thailand users whose inlet water never gets truly cold — cheapest device, cheapest install, and usually no meter work (though 5(15) is still borderline — see section ②).

4,500 watts

The sweet spot for homes already on a 15(45) meter: clearly warmer in cool season, ~70 THB/month extra, and 4 mm² cable + 30A breaker is a spec every electrician knows. Just confirm the bathroom's existing cable can take it — not every home was wired with 4 mm².

6,000 watts

Northern/northeastern Thailand where cool-season water gets genuinely cold, multi-point supply, or serious hot-shower users — 27.2A mandates 6 mm² cable + a 15(45)A meter with no exceptions. Highest install cost, but a cool-season temperature a 3500W unit physically can't reach.

The thing people learn only when the bill arrives: in cool season a water heater quietly uses **more** electricity — inlet water drops several degrees, so the unit works harder (or you turn it up and shower longer).
