Home Electrical Fires — Causes, Prevention, and How to Put One Out

Most home electrical fires come from a few preventable causes: short circuits, overloaded circuits, loose connections that overheat, and low-quality power strips. Most home electrical fires come from short circuits, drawing more current than the wire/breaker is rated for, loose connections that overheat, and low-quality or daisy-chained power strips. Prevent them with correctly sized breakers and wiring, TIS-marked equipment, and a licensed electrician checking old wiring periodically. If an electrical fire starts, cut power at the main breaker first if you can do so safely, and never throw water on a live electrical fire — use a dry-chemical or CO₂ extinguisher, then call fire emergency 199. What causes electrical fires in the home?

Almost all of them are heat building up at one point of the circuit and then igniting nearby material. The five most common causes, per utility and EIT guidance, are below — and the good news is every one is preventable.
  1. 1) Short circuit (conductors touch and arc)

    Degraded/cracked insulation, rodent-bitten wires, water ingress or wrong wiring lets two conductors touch, producing a huge current in a fraction of a second; the arc can ignite material instantly. A good breaker trips first — see the short-circuit explainer.

  2. 2) Overload (drawing more than the wire/breaker rating)

    Plugging several high-wattage appliances into one circuit, or using undersized wire, makes the wire heat up until the insulation melts. High-draw appliances (water heaters, irons, air-con) should be on their own circuit and breaker — check sizing on the meter/breaker amp guide.

  3. 3) Loose or poor connections (heat at the joint)

    A plug pin, outlet or terminal in the switchboard that is not tight enough develops high resistance and heats up over time. Warning signs are a yellowed outlet, a plug that feels warm, or a faint burning smell — stop using it and call an electrician at once.

  4. 4) Low-quality power strips / daisy-chaining

    Power strips with no TIS mark, thin cord and no overload breaker are a very common ignition point — and daisy-chaining strip into strip is worse. Choose a TIS-marked strip with a breaker switch, and never load several high-wattage appliances onto one strip.

  5. 5) Aged wiring / substandard installation

    Homes on decades-old wiring have brittle insulation, and installation that ignores EIT standards (sloppy splices, no conduit) raises the risk sharply. Have a licensed electrician inspect the wiring every few years — especially before extending the house.

How do you prevent an electrical fire at home?

One principle: never let any point of the circuit run too hot, and cut power fast when something is wrong. The checklist below covers both equipment and habits — most items are DIY; leave wiring and breaker installation to a licensed electrician.
  • Size breakers and wiring to the real load, and put high-draw appliances (water heaters, air-con, irons) on their own circuits.

  • Install an RCD/RCBO and grounding so power cuts instantly on a leak or short — see home grounding.

  • Choose TIS-marked equipment — power strips, outlets and appliances — and never daisy-chain strips.

  • Unplug high-draw appliances when idle — especially irons, water heaters and kettles — and never leave them on when you leave home.

  • Watch for warning signs — yellowed outlets, warm plugs, burning smell, a breaker that trips often, flickering lights — and never ignore them (why a breaker keeps tripping).

  • Have a licensed electrician inspect the wiring every few years — especially older homes and before any extension — to EIT standards.

Bonus: any electrical or solar installation should go through a qualified installer — sloppy installation is a leading source of heat at connection points.

Which fire extinguisher works on an electrical fire?

On a fire that is still energised, use a non-conductive extinguisher: dry chemical (ABC), carbon dioxide (CO₂) or a clean agent. Never use water or foam — they conduct electricity and risk a shock. The safest move is to cut power at the main first; the fire then becomes an ordinary one that is easier to put out.

Every home should keep at least one extinguisher where it is easy to grab (kitchen or near the main breaker) and know how to use it before an emergency. An electrical fire started — the 4 steps to take

Order matters more than speed: cut power first if you safely can. If the fire spreads fast or is beyond control, get out and call immediately — life before property.

  1. Cut power at the main breaker (if safe)

    Throw the main breaker to cut current to the whole house — that turns it into an ordinary fire you can fight more safely. Do not touch burning equipment with bare hands, and do not go near if smoke is thick or the fire has spread.

  2. Use the right extinguisher — never water

    If the fire is still small and power is off, use a dry-chemical or CO₂ extinguisher aimed at the base of the flame. If power is not yet off and the fire is live, never use water — it conducts and risks a shock.

  3. Get out + call fire 199

    If you cannot put it out in a few seconds, leave the building at once, close doors to slow the fire, and call 199 (fire) or 1669 (medical emergency) if anyone is hurt — DDPM hotline 1784.

  4. After: inspect before switching back on + notify insurer

    Do not switch the breaker back on yourself — have a licensed electrician inspect the damaged wiring and equipment first. Photograph the damage as evidence, and notify your fire-insurance company promptly to open a claim.

Does fire insurance cover an electrical fire?

A residential fire-insurance policy generally covers fire caused by an electrical short circuit, but the exact coverage, exclusions and limits depend on each policy — so this page prints no figures. Go by your policy's terms and ask your insurer or the OIC (insurance regulator) hotline 1186.
To make a claim go smoothly: keep receipts for electrical work by a licensed electrician, photograph before/after, and notify the insurer within the policy's time limit. Mortgaged homes usually already carry fire insurance the bank requires — check the policy has not lapsed.
