How Many Watts Does a TV Use? What Does All-Day Viewing Cost?

Short answer: a modern LED TV uses about 30–180 watts depending on screen size (32" ~30–55W, 55" ~80–130W, 65" ~110–180W); OLED panels draw a little more on bright content. Watched 5 hours a day, that's only tens to low-hundreds of baht a month (a 43" ~50 THB, a 55" ~70 THB) — so a TV is not what makes a bill expensive; aircon and water heaters use many times more. The overlooked part is standby: after you switch off with the remote it still draws ~0.5–3 W all year = ~20–120 THB/year. ① How many watts does a TV use (by size and LED/OLED)?

Bigger screens use more, and at the same size an OLED usually draws more than an LED on bright content. The table below gives typical wattage RANGES for TVs on the Thai market (check your model's No.5 label for its exact figure) plus the monthly cost at 5 viewing hours a day, priced at the real marginal rate incl. Ft and VAT.

Takeaway ①: the whole household's TVs draw at the level of light bulbs, not aircon. If you're sizing up and worried about the bill — the real difference is tens of baht a month, not a deciding factor.

② Watching all day / X hours a day — what's the monthly cost?

A TV's cost is simply "hours × watts". Leaving it on all day as background noise multiplies the bill immediately. This table takes two popular sizes (a 43" ~70W and a 55" ~100W) and prices them at different daily hours.

③ Do big and small TVs differ much in power use?

They do differ, but less than people fear: a 65" uses about 3–4× a 32", yet in money that's only tens of baht a month at normal use, because the base is already low. What actually moves the bill is "how many hours" and "brightness / picture mode", more than screen size itself.

The reason people feel "a big screen makes the bill jump" is usually that they bought a big screen and started "watching longer" and "running bright/HDR mode" at the same time — not the size alone. What actually cuts a TV's cost: lower the brightness from the factory default (sets ship far brighter than a home room needs), turn on the Eco / energy-saving picture mode, and disable always-on bright features when you're not watching. Standby power: does it still draw after the remote turns it off?

It does, but little: modern sets meeting low-standby norms draw about 0.3–0.5 W; a smart TV with "quick start" enabled, or an older set, can draw ~1–3 W. Over a year that's roughly 20–120 THB per set — small, but several TVs plus a set-top box and a soundbar all on standby together can add up to a few hundred baht a year.
