How to Clean Solar Panels Properly
Panel cleaning is the most important maintenance step, as dust, grime, and bird droppings are the main causes of reduced power generation. In Thailand with high PM2.5 levels, cleaning panels at least every 3 months is recommended.
Best Time
Early morning (before 9:00) or late afternoon (after 16:00) when panels are cool — water won't evaporate too quickly leaving residue, and reduces thermal shock risk
Do
- Use clean water (tap or RO water) to gently rinse panels
- Use a soft sponge or brush with gentle bristles for stubborn stains
- Use mild soap (pH neutral) diluted with water for oil stains or bird droppings
- Wash from top to bottom, letting water flow with gravity
Don't
- Never use high-pressure washers — they can damage panel glass
- Never use harsh chemical cleaners, acids, or alkalis
- Never walk on or place heavy objects on panels — may cause micro-cracks
- Never clean panels at midday when hot — thermal shock can crack the glass
Inverter Maintenance
The inverter is the "heart" of a solar system, converting DC electricity from panels into AC electricity used in buildings. Inverters have a lifespan of about 10-15 years — shorter than panels (25 years) — so they need extra attention.
